An Average Profile Picture Remains Unchanged for 2 Years, Survey Reveals

An online local services marketplace conducted a survey of 2,000 Britishers, which revealed that on average, social media profile pictures are up to 2 years old.

Social media has a great influence on our lives. Every business, conversation and event is supported by these platforms. People cannot go a day without signing in on their social media accounts. However, it is strange to know that some people do not change their online profile pictures for up to 4 years.

Bidvine, and online local services marketplace, dug deep into the matter to see how frequently social media users update their profile pictures. The survey took into account 2,000 British people, who were using social media and online dating sites. When the online services company questioned them how often do they change their profile pictures, Bidvine was astonished by the results.

The survey results uncovered that the dating app users kept their profile pictures on for a short time (2 to 3 weeks) while Facebook and Instagram users took longer than that (5 to 6 months). People using dating apps (Grindr, Tinder, etc) changed their online display pictures more often than other social media apps.

social media profile pics

Dating websites were a big shocker when it came to the age of user profile pictures. Some of the profile pictures were as old as 4 years! Plenty of Fish is a dating website where users didn’t change their profile picture for 3.2 years. On the other hand, Match.com users didn’t touch their display pictures for 4 years. The overall statistics for dating websites suggest that they had the most outdated profile pictures.

When the participants were asked when did they switch to a new profile picture on different social media accounts, their responses were as follows:

1. Grindr 2 weeks
2. Tinder 3 weeks
3. Whatsapp 2.5 months
4. Facebook 5 months
5. Instagram 6 months
6. SnapChat 8 months
7. Twitter 1.8 years
8. LinkedIn 2.1 years
9. Plenty of Fish 3.2 years
10. Match.com 4 years

11% of the participants confessed that their profile photograph was taken more than 10 years ago. The respondents were also asked the reason for their ridiculously outdated profile pictures. 62% expressed their disappointment while finding good pictures, while 49% said they wanted to look younger to those who visit their profiles.

The statistics also disclosed the fact that 1 out of 4 people didn’t want to become prominent in front of their boss and chose to stick to the same profile picture for long.

Speaking about the results, Sohrab Jahanbani, CEO of Bidvine.com said that judging by the regularity of how people update their profile pictures, older generation stick to their mature character and do not change their profile pictures frequently. Therefore, the conventional dating websites and social media apps that have a professional bent to them (like LinkedIn and Twitter) have the most outdated profile pictures. On the other hand, young people and bachelors like using their latest photos.

The fact that some people were unable to find good pictures of them was very disturbing for Bidvine, so they have launched pop up photo booths that offer professional photography. It is a convenient option for those who wish to update their profile pictures. After all, professional photographs add a touch of class regardless you want them for a wedding, company headshot or for an online profile.

How To Choose A Printer Toner Cartridge

First, some things you may need to know about toner cartridges:

What is a Toner cartridge? (also called laser toner)

It is the consumable component of a laser printer. It contains the material (toner) used to produce the image onto the paper.

What is Laser Toner?

Unlike ink, toner is a dry powdery substance. During the laser printing process, the toner is electrically charged (static) so that it is attracted to the printer drum (kind of like a balloon rubbed against your hair than placed against a wall). The toner is then transferred to the paper. The fuser is responsible for melting the laser toner to create the permanent image on the paper.

What Are OEM Cartridges?

OEM is the acronym for Original Equipment Manufacturer. This is the type of cartridge that is produced by the company that manufactured your printer. Of course, the manufacturer of your printer recommends you use their products and will claim their products work better than the competition or the lower priced compatible brands.  Unfortunately, OEM cartridges are the most expensive choice due to their brand-name status.

What Are Compatible Toner Cartridges?

A compatible toner cartridge is one that is made of all new parts, but they may not be the same brand as that of your printer or multi-function device. Instead, the parts in compatible toner cartridges are very similar to those produced by your printer company. This type of printer cartridge is usually low cost and is usually a very good option. These cartridges are typically readily available at any office supply store or even a big box store such as Target or Wal-Mart.

What Are Re-fill Toner Cartridges?

Refurbished toner cartridges are known by a few names. You may hear them called recycled or re-manufactured toner cartridges. These types of cartridges are recycled by companies specializing in this process.

Some toner cartridge re-manufacturing companies collect original OEM cartridges that can no longer be used. They are then disassembled and used to create new products. Other companies will pick up used cartridges from their customers so they can use them again passing the savings along to their clients.  Either way,  old cartridges are disassembled.  The parts that don’t work  are replaced with parts that do work.

How To Choose a Printer Toner Cartridge?

OEM toner cartridges are generally the most expensive part of a printer, and there usually is not a big difference in quality between an OEM cartridge and a quality compatible or re-manufactured toner cartridge. In a lot of cases the OEM companies are now manufacturing their cartridges using parts that are recycled, yet you are still paying for all newly manufactured parts. If any manufacture tells you that using a compatible or re-manufactured cartridge will void your warranty, they are breaking the law. Even using a refilled cartridge will not void your warranty (but we don’t recommend using refills).

The compatible cartridges are the so-called “generic” cartridges. They are usually built using parts that have been recycled from old cartridges. If these are purchased from a company that has been in the business for a while and has a good reputation, you will get the same or better quality than that of the OEM for a much lower price.

But finding third-party ink for your specific printer model can be a challenge, particularly if your unit is very new, very old, or not very popular. Before driving around town to find the right cartridge, do a little homework online.

Like the online arms of other major retailers, v4ink.com has an ink and toner cartridge Finder. Click the link to search the suitable toner cartridge from V4INK base on your printer model. You could find third-party supplies toner cartridge for your Brother, Canon, Dell, Samsung, Lenovo and/or HP printers.

A New Drug Could Completely Cure Type 2 Diabetes

0

All over the world, the number of people with diabetes continues to be on the rise since the 1980s, with 422 million people diagnosed by 2014. The United States alone has experienced a considerable rise in the incidence of diabetes, with the number of Americans diagnosed increasing from 5.5 million in 1980, to approximately 22 million in 2014—an increase of about 400 percent in less than forty years. In the UK, in 2016, the number of people living with diabetes in crossed the 4 million mark – an increase of 65 per cent in 10 years.

what is type 2 diabetes

Many develop type 2 diabetes as they grow older, as their body’s response to insulin –  a hormone that controls how much sugar circulates in our blood – gets weaker. Some people can manage their symptoms by sticking to a restrictive diet, or using medications to remove sugar from their system, although many of these have side effects, such as weight gain or diarrhoea.

These drugs can only help manage the disease – they cannot reverse it. “We don’t have anything that can overcome insulin resistance,” says Emily Burns of the charity Diabetes UK. As a result, many people end up having to inject insulin to make sure excess sugar is removed from their blood. Left untreated, type 2 diabetes can lead to kidney and heart disease, foot ulcers, nerve damage, and eyesight problems.

Now, a team of researchers from the University of California, San Diego, led by Dr. Stephanie Stanford is proposing a remedy in the form of a single pill that aims to bring back insulin sensitivity in diabetic patients. Until recently, drugs were unable to revive the insulin signaling function in diabetic patients. The drug created by Stanford’s team, however, hopes to reinstating this function.

How Does It Work

The new drug inhibits an enzyme called low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase (LMPTP), that is suspected to bring about the lowering of cell sensitivity to insulin. With reduced LMPTP activity, the drug re-enables insulin receptors on the surface of the cells — particularly those inside the liver — which in turn restores the cell’s power to regulate excess sugar. When the body can once again regulate blood sugar levels, the condition of Type 2 diabetes is effectively reversed.

The researchers fed laboratory mice a high-fat diet that made them obese, which subsequently caused them to develop high blood sugar levels. The drug was given to the mice on a daily basis and it successfully restored insulin sensitivity without producing any negative side effects.

While the lab mice trial’s results are exciting, the researchers have to continue testing the drug for safety, so human clinical trials will take some time. But Stanford is confident that the drug “could create a new therapeutic strategy for treating type 2 diabetes,”

Although we have come across diabetes reversal in patients before, it’s never been achieved through medication alone. So, if this new drug is approved for human use, it might be a truly revolutionary treatment.

Scientists Create Renewable Plastic from Christmas Trees

The majority of plastics today are created from oil, which is unsustainable. This can change though. Scientists from the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies (CSCT) at the University of Bath (UK) have developed a renewable plastic from a chemical known as pinene which is present in pine needles.

Pinene is the aromatic chemical from the terpene family that gives pine trees their distinctive “Christmas smell” and is also waste by-product of the paper industry.

The researchers hope the plastic might be utilized in a variety of applications, including plastic bags, food packaging and even medical and surgical implants.

Renewable plastics from trees

Degradable polyesters such as PLA (polylactic acid) are produced from crops such as sugar cane or corn, however PLA can be mixed with a rubbery polymer known as caprolactone to make it more flexible. The problem is, caprolactone is produced from crude oil, and so the resulting plastic is not completely renewable.

The scientists published their results in the journal Polymer Chemistry (pdf). They used pinene as the raw material to make a this new type of plastic that can be used in place of caprolactone.

Helena Quilter, a PhD scholar at the CSCT, elaborated:

“We are not talking about recycling old Christmas trees into plastics, but rather utilizing a waste product from an industry that would otherwise be thrown away, and turning it into something useful. So if we are able to make plastic from sustainable sources, it might make an enormous difference to the environment.”

Replacing fossil fuels

Plastic from pine needles
Could we really have mass produced plastic from pine needles?

Professor Matthew Davidson, who established the CSCT at Bath in 2008 and is currently the Director of its Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) says: “This research is part of a wider project that aims at using bio-based chemical substances like pinene as a sustainable starting material for making a variety of useful products in place of petrochemicals. This reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and offers a renewable feed-stock that has the potential to revolutionize the chemical trade.”

The EPSRC has been funding the research, which is also investigating using other terpenes, such as limonene from citrus fruit, as an alternative to petrochemicals to make a range of products from plastics to pharmaceuticals.

The research is still it the early phase – so far just a few grams have been made – however the scientists’ goal is to scale up the method to produce bigger quantities in the coming future.

New Snake-like Robot Janitors For Undersea Maintenance

0

Science has reached a new level of creepy with an autonomous ?”eel robot”. A Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) spin-off company called Eelume created these robots to perform undersea repair and maintenance. The company is describing them as “undersea janitors”. The robots are designed with clamp like mouths which can be used to tighten valves and chokes. They can perform planned and on-demand inspection. The snake ? like design allows them to reach tight spaces quickly and effectively. Eelume believes the robots will reduce costs for undersea inspection, repair and maintenance.

eelume's eelGranted, there are far more creepier things at the bottom of the ocean, we are sure the “eel janitor” will fit right in.

Did Einstein Really Believe in God?

1

We at GadgTecs love science, and naturally, when you love science, you are bound to come across Albert Einstein, because, you know, E=MC2. Without a doubt, he was one of the most influential scientists this world has ever seen. Many people have written books and papers on him, but there are still some questions that always start a debate. One such question is: Did Einstein believe in God?

I wasn’t thinking of writing an article on the subject, initially, I was just planning to write a couple of lines to answer a specific question regarding a saying of Einstein. The quote is: “The more I study science, the more I believe in God“. Most people, usually atheists, say or think that this is probably one of those fake quotes being attributed to Einstein (of which there is no dearth) but not every quote that is hard to believe is a false attribution.

There is so much debate and so much has been written on the subject of his belief that there is an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to the topic “Religious and philosophical views of Albert Einstein” Now, mind you, the question I am answering is NOT what kind of God did Einstein believe in! People who initially said or say that he didn’t believe in a God (or that this quote can’t be Einstein’s) later change their statement to something on the shade of ‘oh, he didn’t believe in a personal God, but a non-personal one’ or ‘Albert Einstein believed in Spinoza’s pantheistic God.’ First, I’ll prove that, indeed, Einstein did believe in a God. Then you, the reader can decide for yourself what kind of a God he believed in.

Einstein never liked being called an atheist. Once, he even characterised himself as ‘devoutly religious’ in a mystical sense, evident by the following statement, which appeared in the biography “Einstein: His Life and Times” by Philipp Frank (in 1947), who himself was not only a colleague and friend of Einstein’s, but a mathematician, physicist, and an influential philosopher.

“The most beautiful emotion we can experience is the mystical. It is the power of all true art and science.
He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead.
To know that what is in-penetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and
the most radiant beauty, which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most primitive forms—
this knowledge, this feeling, is at the center of true religiousness.
In this sense, and in this sense only, I belong to the rank of devoutly religious men.”

Who better to tell about Einstein’s views then his close friends and colleagues? Another of his close friend, Dr. Max Jammer, a physicist from Israel who got his doctorate in ‘experimental physics’ in 1942 writes a lot on his views on religion and God. According to Jammer, “Einstein always protested against being regarded as an atheist.”Einstein takes the opposite point of view: “A legitimate conflict between science and religion cannot exist. Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind.” In his book “Einstein and Religion: Physics and Theology”, the award-winning author also tells us some more quotes from Einstein, such as:

“Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe – a spirit vastly superior to that of man.”

and

albert-einstein-quotes-about-god-1
“I want to know how God created this world. I want to know his thoughts.”

and

“My God created laws… His universe is not ruled by wishful thinking but by immutable laws.”

and

Einstein's quote on science and religion
“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

and

“This firm belief in a superior mind that reveals itself in the world of experience, represents my conception of God.”

There are many more such quotes but the best one I like was:

“In the view of such harmony in the cosmos which I, with my limited human mind, am able to recognize, there are yet people who says there is no God. But what makes me really angry is that they quote me for support of such views.”

Now, I hope everyone can see that the kind of God Albert Einstein believed in is a God who created the Universe, its laws, and all that there is in it. Now, as for the original quote, well, that too is authentic. Jim Holt, an American philosopher and a best selling author, whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The American Scholar, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Review of Books, and the Wall Street Journal, tells us the quote in his 1997 WSJ article titled “Science Resurrects God“, which he apparently took from the book “Berlin in Lights: The Diaries of Count Harry Kesslera”.
